Wednesday Hodgepodge – 7/17/24

Happy Wednesday! I am joining Joyce for a quick hodgepodge of questions. These five questions are going to be fun, so let’s get to it!

1. What is an adult problem nobody prepared you for?
Money stuff! I wish I had taken a personal finance class in high school or college. I am not super at budgeting, but I’m making it work. I also would love to know more about stocks and investments. All of my coursework was focused on child development and education, and that’s not much help when it comes to adult money.

2. Without mentioning any tech, what’s your most prized possession?
Hmm, that’s a hard one. If I had to grab a few things from our house, I’d grab photos first even though most are backed up. I’d grab my pillow that was made from my grandmother’s wedding dress. I have some special jewelry that I love. Oh, and my Lilly collection. I truly view it as a collection and hope that one day my boys have a wife or daughter about my size that is so excited to inherit all of that beautiful clothing after I die. I’m keeping it until then!

3. It’s National Peach Ice Cream Day (July 17th). Will you be celebrating? Do you like peaches? Given a choice would you prefer peach ice cream, peach pie, peach cobbler, or just hand me a peach? Do you own anything that is peach in color?
I do not love peach ice cream, but I did get some peaches from our local farm yesterday and they are delicious! I do own some peach things but I usually wear them in the summer with a tan. Peach isn’t my best winter color.

4. What makes a friendship successful?
I think it has to be mutual level of commitment over time. Both friends also need to want the best for each other. I think the friends need to make time for each other, even if it isn’t a ton all the time. Friendships can be built on a lot of things – children, shared memories/experiences, common interests, location, etc. In a successful friendship, you are there for each other no matter what!

5. Let’s give our brains a rest and do a little summertime this or that…beach or pool? ice cream or snowcone? amusement park or camping? burger or hot dog? watermelon or strawberries? get up early or sleep in late? sunrise or sunset?
Beach AND pool
Ice Cream (mint chocolate chip) AND snow cone (lime)
Amusement park
Burger AND hot dog
Watermelon AND strawberries
Get up early
Sunrise AND sunset
Well, I did not do a very good job picking just one. I love summer and everything about it!

6. Insert your own random thought here.
I do not love to plan, cook, or clean up dinner in the summer, but I find that I am doing it way more this summer than ever before. I’ve gotten a little bored of our eating out options in town. The boys have swim practice until 6 most days so we wouldn’t get out to eat until 6:30, which is later than I like to eat. Eating out has gotten pretty expensive, especially now that all of us eat adult meals and the kids are coming from 2+ hours of swimming. I am trying to lean into easy meals and fresh fruits and vegetables. We eat mostly gluten free and try to avoid dairy at dinner. I’d love any favorite recipes that you want to share!

That was fun! I can’t wait to see what everyone else answered! Have a great day full of sunshine and books!

I’ve had a houseful this week, and some into next week so a lot of cooking. Lots of kids who need three full meals a day too. I like to cook, but I don’t enjoy cooking all the time. Eating out with babies is often it’s own kind of stress, so I press on. I do some crock pot meals in the summer because we like to be out on the water and then I definitely don’t want to cook upon returning home. It’s nice to have something mostly ready to go. I had my wedding dress made into a ‘getting ready’ gown for my younger daughter. It turned out so nice and was a special gift to give and I think receive too. Enjoy your day!

I wish I understood more about stocks and investments too! I had to chuckle at your either or list picks because I’m often like that too with either a both or a neither answer immediately popping into my head. We tend to eat a lot of grilled meats with assorted veggies over either pasta or rice in the summer– quick and easy.

I totally agree about eating out right now. It has gotten expensive and I feel like it needs to be pretty outstanding to spend that money on it. I also know what you mean about the personal finance. When I think back to my recent-college-graduate, 22 year old self buying a new car, I cringe. I must have been that salesman’s easiest profit ever! Ugh!

Summer meal planning is a struggle for me right now too, especially since we were just on vacation for two weeks. I’m out of the habit of planning, buying for, and making dinner. And I agree that I’d rather eat earlier. My middle is working at a day camp and his shift is 8-5. So we get home by 5:20 and then I start. Last night we didn’t eat until 6:30 and I was not happy!

My dad loves the peach shake from chick fil a. I don’t love peach things either. I wish I could get a plan for Friday/sat night dinner. I never want to cook and then I feel like we get carry out from same places. I often just have eggs and toast 😂it’s just so expensive to eat out (like you said) and I feel like we go to the same places. I agree with what you said about friendships too.

We are heading into those tough money decisions about withdrawing funds. Oye. Summer meal planning hasn’t been going well here, either, and I’m just cooking for 2! I enjoyed your answers. Happy Hodgepodge!
