Monthly Musings – 10/28/21

Happy Thursday! It is the last Thursday of the month so I am linking up with Holly and Patty to answer ten seasonal questions. This is one of my favorite link ups because it gets me thinking about the things I love and want to do in the next month.

1. What are your Halloween traditions?

I always make chili for dinner on Halloween. On school nights, I make it the night before and put my crock pot bowl in the refrigerator. I just pop the bowl in the warmer in the morning on low and then dinner is ready whenever we are. This year, I’ll make it in the morning and let it cook in the crockpot all afternoon. Jeff makes a yummy cider drink for us to have while we walk around. The boys usually trick or treat with friends and neighbors. My parents hang at our house and hand out candy to all the kids.

2. Favorite fall activities?

I love the homecoming parade in our town. It is tonight so I’ll be sure to share some pictures tomorrow.

I love watching the Charlie Brown Halloween and Thanksgiving movies with my family.

I love a turkey trot on Thanksgiving. The Bloody Marys always taste a little bit better after the run.

3. Favorite fall recipe?

Anything in my crockpot! I love using it on Sunday so the house smells great all afternoon. My two most used recipes are Mexican Chicken Chili (scroll all the way down for the recipe) and Pot Roast. Sometimes we make the chili with ground beef instead of ground chicken.

4. What beverage makes you think of fall?

Apple cider!! On Halloween, Jeff makes hot or cold apple cider with caramel or whipped vodka for trick or treating. It is so delicious!!

5. Favorite fall fashion staples?

I love a cardigan. I think I say that every season. 😂 In the fall, I like cardigans that are a little warmer so I can avoid a coat for as long as possible.

6. Do you decorate for fall? Halloween? Both?

I sure do decorate for both. I have a bunch of orange pumpkins that are not jack-o-lanterns. The wreath on my front door is fall leaves and berries and I leave it up until Black Friday.

I have a bunch of Halloween specific things, too. Some fun signs, our light up pumpkins on the front porch, and two fun deco mesh wreaths that my mom made for me.

7. Bonfire? Corn maze? Hayride?

No, nope, no thank you. I do not love any of them. I hate smelling like a fire when I’m ready for bed. I don’t love to be trapped in a corn maze. And, hayrides make me itchy. Instead of those things, I’ll sit outside on a patio with a heater and enjoy a beverage while everyone else does bonfires, corn mazes, and hayrides.

8. Apple pie or apple cider?

Apple cider all the way. I am not a big pie person. We have an orchard near us that makes the best apple cider. We are already on our 3rd half gallon this month. I’ll probably get another one today.

9. Favorite type of apple?

My favorite apple is a pink lady. Holly have you tried one yet? They are a little tart and a little sweet. I also like jonagold apples. They also tend to be a little more tart.

10. What are your Thanksgiving traditions?

It’s so delicious that way!

Most years we start out with a turkey trot and then rush home to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. I think I would give up the turkey dinner before I would give up watching the parade on Thanksgiving. We usually have a big breakfast during the parade and some snacks through the day. We have dinner on the early side (5ish) and then divide up. The guys usually want to watch football and the girls watch White Christmas.

I am getting really excited for a weekend Halloween now. We won’t have to rush after school, but it is a school night so it won’t go on too late. I am also getting excited for Thanksgiving. Some years we go to Jeff’s parents’ house and some years we go to South Carolina, but this year we are staying home and going to my parents.

I can’t wait to see everyone else’s answers to these 10 fun questions! Have a great day full of sunshine and books!

We used to run a Turkey Trot when we lived in the prairies and now I’m think we should find one to do here. I think maybe they have the Oktoberfest run before the parade on Thanksgiving. Maybe that should be a goal for next year. And yes, when I have turkey dinner, I do it the “old fashioned way” too! Love that!!!

Your Halloween cocktail sounds amazing! We love doing the Turkey Trot in our town every Thanksgiving morning- such a fun tradition and justifies the calories later on 😉 Thanks for linking up and NO can you believe I have never tried the Pink Lady apple? Need to make that happen! 🙂

We went to my moms for a few Thanksgivings and my husband ended up guilting me into cooking a whole second meal two days later so I have since given up on going anywhere Thanksgiving and host at our house.
