Wednesday Hodgepodge – 1/28/26

Happy Wednesday! I am joining Joyce for a quick hodgepodge of questions. These five questions are going to be fun, so let’s get to it!

1. I live in the south so we’re pretty much only talking about the weather right now. Give us a weather report from where you live. Does the kind of weather you’re having today affect your mood in some way? We are talking about the weather right now, too. We had about 8 inches of snow on Sunday and then a bit of sleet/wintry mix on top of that. All the schools closed for Monday on Sunday morning and early afternoon, which is a nice surprise. The weather always affects my mood, no matter how hard I try not to let it. I’ve gotten smarter about how to handle the winter weather. I have a happy light that I use when I start feeling really low. I also try to get outside every day for a bit of time, even if it is cloudy. The fresh air helps me stay cheerful in the winter. I do not worry about summer weather. Even when it’s rainy or cloudy, the warm air makes me happy.

Our view after cleaning up most of the snow Monday afternoon. ⛄

2.  Avocados, kale, cauliflower and cottage cheese have all had their time to shine. 2026 brings us the year of the cabbage. Is this a vegetable you like? If so, what are some of your favorite dishes that call for cabbage?  Oh, I am not a big fan of cabbage. I don’t mind it in the Taylor Farms kale salad or in fish tacos, but that is about it.

3. Was a Cabbage Patch Doll a part of your childhood? Or maybe your children’s childhood? What’s a toy trend from your childhood you remember wanting for your own?  It sure was a part of my childhood. I was born in 1980 so I was in the prime age for my mom to fight for a doll. Don’t worry, she didn’t! My grandmother lived in a community that was mostly retirees at the time and she was able to get them for us. She also got Holiday Barbies for my sister and I if my mom couldn’t. After my sister and I loving Cabbage Patch Kids growing up, my mom planned a trip to Babyland General Hospital for my niece. That sounds fabulous doesn’t it?? Well, no one warned my mom or my sister. It was definitely not what they expected! Visitors can witness Mother Cabbage give birth to a real “live” Cabbage Patch Kid. They change some of the real birth terms to make it more cabbage-y, but they basically walk the visitors through the birthing process. I think they were expecting something like the American Girl Doll store/restaurant/experience and it was not that. Have you been? Do you know anyone that has?

4. Something you’ve spent a lot of time doing lately?  Not driving my car and moving cars in our driveway! Jeff’s car and the car we have for Jack had to go to the body shop and the mechanic this month. Luckily my parents have an extra car and let us borrow it while we were down one. We’ve been having Jack drive the car he has the most experience with (mine) while his car was in the shop. It feels like we’ve been playing the shell game with cars lately. I am not complaining one bit because I am so grateful that we have an extra car to borrow.

5. Somehow it’s the last week of January…sum up your month in just three sentences.
Why is it so cold? We’re at a swim meet!  I just finished a great book!

6. Insert your own random thought here. I was so happy to be home on Tuesday for our second snow day. My snow day tradition is watching the Today show in my pjs and Tuesday was Al’s 30th anniversary. It was so fun to watch the Today show celebrate Al and share all the fun he brings to the Today show and all of America. We didn’t get to meet him when we were there a few years ago, but we love Al and the Today show at my house!

That was fun! I can’t wait to see what everyone else answered! Have a great day full of sunshine and books!

Well thanks for the info on the Babyland experience. Someone else mentioned it and I was thinking it might be fun to take my granddaughters one day. It’s just over an hour from here but I think I might need to know more before we go : ) Your snow is pretty. I know it gets old pretty fast, but it’s pretty when it falls. Have a great day!

This weather has been crazy and more is coming to the east it seems next weekend. I went to the Babyland Hospital about 20 years ago or so. I don’t remember the specifics about it, but it was definitely nothing like the AG store experience! I am glad you have enjoyed the snow days and stay safe!

Oh, I used to watch the TODAY show every day!! I bet they had a fantastic tribute to Al Roker – he’s kind of an “everyone’s guy” isn’t he? I’ve never heard of any of the Cabbage Patch spin-off stuff. . .kind of like Elf on a Shelf, I “just” missed it (and not feeling like I was left out of either at all!). Hope you got back to school today (if you wanted to) and you all stay warm 🙂

I had never heard of the Babyland experience until this link up today… and I’m kind of glad we never made it there. But I definitely remember the Cabbage patch craze and I had a whole lot of them and a million various accessories by the time I outgrew that stage.

The weather affects my mood too. I’ve been grumpy the last few days because it’s been grey and gloomy out, today is sunny and my mood has improved so much.
That is so great your grandmother could get the toys that your mom couldn’t. I had no idea until today you could visit Babyland General Hospital. Wow!
It sounds like you had a great snow day!

That Cabbage Patch experience- how odd! You’d think they would make it more commercially like an American Girl Doll experience with shopping and dining options. We have an extra car and it’s really nice! We actually have four cars at our house right now with our son living with us. The cars have needed to be off the street due to the snow so we’ve had two cars in the driveway which makes getting the garaged cars out tricky. But it’s not a bad problem to have…

The Babyland experience sounds…unique! What a great picture at the Today show. I visited when I went to NYC about 10 years ago. Such a cool experience!

We’ve been playing musical cars around here too…we finally got one for the kids to share, and it’s parked in the back of the driveway for now (thanks to the weather) but we’ve had to play car switcheroo , etc
I loved my cabbage patch doll in the 80’s.
As much as I love snow and snow days, after a string of them like we’ve had, I do noticed a change in my mood. I was happy to get out of the house today
