Monthly Musings – 5/27/21

Happy Thursday! We are having a great week! Yesterday’s work from home Wednesday weather was amazing and we embraced it! I am so ready to talk summer with you today for Holly and Patty’s linkup!

1. Favorite Summer Tradition?

One of my favorite summer traditions is kicking off summer with the Memorial Day parade in my hometown. There wasn’t a big parade last year or this year, but there were a few people marching down the street to keep the longest continuously running Memorial Day parade in the USA going. I am sure the parade will be back big next year!

I also love our mom and kids August trip. My mom and I have taken the kids on a little August trip a few times. We’ve been to Hilton Head to see my sister. We went to Western Massachusetts to visit 6 museums in 4 days. We have a great Florida trip planned out but we haven’t picked dates to go, maybe 2022.

The years I don’t go on a trip with my mom, I take the boys on a little trip. We’ve gone to visit my sister a bunch. We’ve also gone to Ocean City. We timed it when sports start up at work for Jeff and he’s working longer hours. It’s nice for him to have some quiet time and it’s a great last hurrah of summer for us!

Our family beach trip is another one of my favorite traditions. We usually go to the beach with lots of different people but one night we decide to go out to dinner, just the 4 of us. We usually go to Grotto’s Pizza and all four of us look forward to it every year!

I love my personal tradition of saving the Summer Beach Reads for after school ends. Occasionally I will read a book or two from the list before school gets out, but I try to save them. It makes summer that much sweeter!

2. Any Vacation Plans This Summer?

You bet we do!! We are heading to the beach as much as possible.

We are heading back to the Greenbrier next month and I can’t wait. We haven’t been in 10 years! I have a feeling our experience will be much different this time.

2 year old Jack loved riding in the front seat to the pool!

I’m still working on our calendar to see if there is room to squeeze in another long weekend vacation somewhere. 🤞🏽

3. Ocean, Pool, or Lake?

Ocean and pool all the way!! I try to get near water every day in the summer. If we aren’t at the pool, we go to the beach and vice versa!

I’m not much of a lake girl, but I think I’d like the Great Lakes because they’re so big. I haven’t been to any of them, but I’m sure I’ll get there sometime.

4. Favorite Summer Fashion Items?

I love summer fashion! I think summer clothes are the most me! The bright colors, light clothes, and bathing suits are my favorite! I also love sandals and flip flops!

I’ll wear Lilly all year long, but summer Lilly is the best!

5. Favorite Summer Recipe? Please Share!

I love my mom’s/mommom’s cucumbers and onions in the summer. It is technically an easy recipe, but hard to perfect. It’s cucumbers, onions, salt, and sour cream.

I really love dips in the summer! I love jalapeño popper dip with peppers from the garden! I also love corn dip and I’ll share that recipe soon!

6. Strawberry Shortcake or Blueberry Pie?

Strawberry shortcake, definitely. I don’t like blueberries at all so that’s an easy one.

7. What Couldn’t You Do in 2020 That You Can Now Do This Summer?

Fly on a plane!! I guess we could fly last summer, but I didn’t. I just flew to my sister’s recently and I’m hoping to have another plane ride this summer!!

We can go do things now!! Last night, we went to a baseball game. We have concert tickets for later this summer.

8. Favorite Sunscreen?

I really like Hint pineapple sunscreen, but I’m excited to start using Beautycounter’s Countersun sunscreen this year!

9. Favorite Summer Beverage — With or Without Alcohol?

Without alcohol, ice cold Diet Coke any time of day! With alcohol, a key lime crush, also any time of day!

10. Do You Have a Garden This Year? Flowers? Veggies? Both?

We do have a garden. We’ve changed things up a little this year. Jeff takes care of our vegetable garden. This year we planted a variety of tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapeño peppers, cucumbers, strawberries, and mint (for mojitos).

I also planted a bunch of containers with begonias, geraniums, impatiens, and marigolds.

Well, that was fun and I am most definitely ready for summer now!! I can’t wait to hear what your answers are! We have 12 days of school until it will be full on summertime!! I’ll see you tomorrow for Friday Favorites! Have a great day full of sunshine and books!

Ironically, with everything we couldn’t do last summer, we did actually fly on a plane. We were lucky to be able to go and visit my parents, which we’re hoping to do again this summer. I love that you save summer reads for summer. That is such a GREAT idea!

And the lakes I’ve spent the most time at are the Great Lakes. We live within a couple of hours of three of them so we’re hoping to go to one (or more!) this summer. I will warn you that they are COLD!

You have so many awesome travel photos. I love that you go somewhere with your mom or take your kids. That’s a great idea. I’m with you…I don’t like blueberries!

One of my favorite places to be is the beach and I love your beachy pictures! I grew up in a Wisconsin city right on Lake Michigan. I never got tired of seeing the beauty of the lake. The water is really cold though even in the summer. I hope you are able to take your family to the Great Lakes one day.
